Bringing Exposure Therapy Into Your Practice: 10 Key Steps

CE Hours 1.5 Exposure therapy Anxiety disorders OCD Cognitive behavioral therapy

About this course

Exposure therapy is the first-line evidence-based treatment for anxiety disorders and obsessive compulsive disorders. Yet, many clinicians do not receive adequate training on this modality. In this course, Dr. Amelia Aldao will provide you with a step-by-step approach so that you can effectively, consistently, and safely incorporate exposure therapy into your practice. We will begin by reviewing the models of exposure, such as the habituation and inhibitory learning models. We will then go over 10 key steps to applying exposure therapy in your practice, including: building a flexible fear hierarchy that meets clients where they are, addressing treatment interfering behaviors (e.g., safety behaviors, intellectualization, rigidity), managing time effectively, solidifying learning, and facilitating generalization, among others.

Learning Objectives

  • Identify the proposed mechanisms underlying the effectiveness of exposure therapy
  • Explain differences between the habituation and inhibitory learning models of exposure therapy
  • Apply techniques from exposure therapy when treating anxiety disorders and obsessive compulsive disorders
  • Develop flexible exposure hierarchies that meet clients where they are
  • Identify and address potential treatment obstacles, including safety behaviors and intellectualization
